Moving To Berkeley County

Affordable - Accessible - Growing

Berkeley County is growing like crazy. Several large companies have opened branches here recently bringing lots of jobs to the area.  People are attracted to Berkeley County because of the lower cost of housing, the investment potential and the variety of housing choices (in town, suburbs or rural).  And it has become an attractive alternative for telecommuters now that working from home is more prevalent. Another reason Berkeley County is so popular is because of the accessibility to Maryland and Virginia thanks to I81 which runs pretty much down the middle of the county. I81 is a straight shot from the northern part of Maryland  through Berkeley County and straight down to Virginia and beyond.  It makes traveling between those areas fast and easy.  So the convenience, cost of living and less congestion make Berkeley County a desirable place to live.

The Lifestyles & Homes You Find In Berkeley County

In town, in the country, in a subdivision ....

In Town Living
If you like living close to town, there are some beautiful old neighborhoods close to downtown Martinsburg is the county seat.  There are several other towns in Berkeley County but only Martinsburg has a central downtown area. One of those neighborhoods is the War Memorial Park area.  It’s a great walking area.  Beautiful older homes — wide streets — no 2 homes are alike. Plus some really nice people!  Martinsburg High is well known for football championships – which they have won several of.  The Martinsburg Bulldog Stadium just outside downtown Martinsburg is packed at home games.

Living in the country
If you like living in the country, then head west of I81. It gets less densely populated pretty quickly and the further west you go, the more rural.  Hedgesville is the town furthest west in Berkeley County.  The 20,000 acre Sleepy Creek State Forest is in the western part of Hedgesville and it doesn’t get more rural than that.  It’s a beautiful wildlife preserve and even if you don’t live nearby, it’s a short drive from mid-Berkeley County.  If you like country living but need high speed internet and want medical and shopping conveniences, consider looking in the area just west of I81.  And then satisfy your need for the wilderness with a short drive to Sleepy Creek Forest.

Affordable Suburbia
And for some nice subdivisions, there’s Falling Waters to the north and Inwood to the South.  Both these areas have good schools and nice areas. If you are looking for waterfront, you’ll likely be looking in Falling Waters. The Potomac River comprises the entire eastern border of the Falling Waters area and is the dividing line between West Virginia and Maryland.  Commuters to the DC/Maryland metro area often opt to live in Falling Waters.

As Falling Waters is the furthest northeast town in Berkeley County, Inwood and Bunker Hill are the 2 furthest southwest and border Virginia.    Dulles airport is about an hour drive and commuters the Northern Virginia area often opt to live in the southern part of the county for that easy access.
